What my hope is for myself and for every parent is that we can teach our children to love to read.
How do we as parents accomplish this? We show them that we love to read! My children often see me reading. They come and sit on my lap. That’s when I start reading aloud to them whatever I had been reading. Children love this interaction and as they see you love to read then they want to read too. If I’m reading on the couch, sometimes my oldest will get one of his board books and sit next to me so we can read “together.”
Another way to help your children enjoy reading is to make it enjoyable. Grab a snack before you sit down to read, get a special stuffed animal that only comes out at story time, or snuggle up with a cozy blanket (our favorites are Little Giraffe blankets like the one I’ve linked above).
Quick story: when I was 16, I worked at a large boutique baby store in the Feeding department and my oldest sister worked in the Layette department where all the Little Giraffe products were. Anytime I went to Layette to visit her or check for an item, I’d run my fingers over the soft chenille of the Little Giraffe baby blankets. I told her how badly I wanted one in my size. For my 18th birthday, my mom and sister presented me with a Little Giraffe chenille throw blanket in pink! I was obsessed, and we still use it to this day in our home.
When my oldest son was born, my sister gave him a Little Giraffe blanket. So you can imagine that when Little Giraffe reached out to me, I was thrilled! I had loved these blankets since I was a teenager working in a baby store. Now everyone in the family has a Little Giraffe blanket except my husband, but we share :).
One more way to make it enjoyable for little ones is to personalize their reading experience. You may remember a post I did on personalized presents last November — one of the books I shared was the personalized Lost My Name book. Well, Wonderbly (formerly Lost My Name) has come out with another fun personalized book called Kingdom of You, which I’ve linked for you above. They are such fun personalized books filled with each child’s favorite things.
I hope I’ve given you just a few ideas on how to help your children enjoy reading. Happy snuggling and reading!
