I’ve been a huge Star Wars fan since I was a kid–we had the original Star Wars trilogy on VHS at home (I have 3 older brothers that were growing up while the original movies were in theatres). In 4th grade, I started doing my hair in two buns on the sides of my head like Princess Leia and when my friends came over to go swimming in my family’s pool, I’d sometimes insist that we play Jedis–we’d use the colorful pool noodles as light sabers. 🙂
I started purchasing our Star Wars costumes prior to Halloween 2016–a little early, I know! But I love movies and I already knew that I wanted our family to be Star Wars characters since the new movie would be coming out this year! And I’m thankful to have a husband that’s also a Star Wars fan and who goes along with my Halloween costume planning!
However, if you can’t relate to planning your costume well over a year in advance, you can still find a costume last minute by visiting your local Halloween shop or by DIY–and to help get you thinking, here is the Best Star Wars Family Costume I could come up with and other family costume ideas I had while planning ours! Also, how you can be a very last-minute DIY Princess Leia and Han Solo!
Note: if you’ve already got Halloween costumes planned but you want to dress up for opening night of the new Star Wars movie, keep reading!
If you’re familiar with Star Wars, I chose our costumes based on Episode IV: A New Hope, and I’m sure you can figure out why I chose these characters. 🙂
DIY Princess Leia costume: do you have a white dress? Or white top and skirt? Top it off with a silver / metallic-colored belt. If you have a piece of white fabric, go ahead and drape it over your head, but it’s not necessary. Are you one of those people that’s skilled with turning a plain white sheet into a toga in minutes? Just give that toga a hood and put a belt on it. Put your hair in two buns and you have a DIY Leia costume!
DIY Han Solo: this one’s easy: white shirt. Vest. Black pants or track pants. Black shoes or black boots. Done.
More Star Wars Family Costume Ideas (for families of four):
- Parents: Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker (as Anakin or Darth Vader) | Kids: Luke and Leia
- Parents: Leia and Han Solo | Kids: Chewbacca and Wicket the Ewok [based on Episode VI: Return of the Jedi]
- Parents: Queen Amidala and Anakin Skywalker | Kids: C-3PO and R2-D2
- Parents: Leia and Han Solo | Kids: Kylo Ren and Rey
Or, let everyone choose their own character from the amazing cast of characters, from Luke and Leia to Vader and Yoda. Another way you could do it is to choose a specific movie as your theme: Episode I-VII and choose characters from that movie.
Do you love Star Wars too? What character would you dress up as for Halloween? Hope you have a happy Halloween!
